The listed Roman Catholic Church Mariä Geburt is located in Winzenburg, a district of the municipality of Freden (Leine). The church was built between 1857 and 1861 according to plans by the Hanoverian architect and building official Wilhelm Mithoff. The foundation stone was laid on May 9, 1856 and the church was consecrated on September 29, 1861. The unusual size of the elaborate church building for the small village led to the name „Winzenburg Cathedral“.
